RELEASE: PRESS RELEASE: PRESS RELEASE…
MULTI-SECTORAL FORUM (YELLOW MOVEMENT) –
o
Adopt the Bomas
draft of the Constitution through a referendum!
o
Drop charges against MSF fighters!
o
Address the Land issue at the Coast!
o
Make MPs account for Constituency
Development Fund!
We
the Yellow Movement (MSF-Mombasa Chapter), coming
from different parts of the Coast and constituting some of the leading civil
society organisations in the region, would like to inform the public that we
are determined to continue the struggle until Kenyans secure the chance to
speedily conclude the constitutional review. We are ready to mobilise the
masses at the Coast to demand that the ownership of the Constitution be handed
back to the wanainchi.
MSF – Mombasa Chapter calls for the immediate adoption of the Bomas draft through a referendum. We also believe that if there are any “Contentious Issues”, then it is for all Kenyans to dialogue and reach a compromise. We cannot allow the same politicians who are the cause of the delay of the adoption of the Constitution to take over discussions on the “Contentious Issues” in the pretext that they represent Kenyans.
We also call on President Kibaki and the entire NARC government and MPs to stop taking Kenyans for a ride on the Constitution. Should they persist, then we shall ensure that NARC becomes a thing of the past at the Coast as we did with KANU.
We also call on the government to hasten the investigations on the Mulungunipa (Kwale) skirmishes and establish the main cause of the unrest. The government should act fast on the post-mortem report of one of the 5 victims which was released recently and investigate who tortured to death Swalleh Khamis Mwakwawasa. We also call on the government to ensure peace is restored in Mandera and Mai Mahiu.
We call on the government to address the land issue at the Coast which has become a time bomb waiting to explode. At the same time, we urge the government to compensate victims of clashes experienced in the yester years.
We call on the Coast Parliamentary Group to come open and explain to out in the Coastarians how they have utilised the Constituency Development Fund and other Public Funds within their Constituencies. To-date, Coast region remains one of the weakest in development.
MSF- Mombasa Chapter is also calling on the government to
unconditionally drop all charges preferred against our MSF colleagues in the
on-going court case at Makadara Law Courts,
We recommit ourselves to the roadmap unveiled at the MSF National Conference Mbagathi. In pursuance of the above, we invite all Kenyans:
To a prayer
session to be held at Makadara Grounds on the 19th
April 2005 to at 10 am to show solidarity with MSF colleagues who will be
attending a court case at Makadara Law Courts,
To converge at Tononoka Grounds,
To a Workers’ Forum to be held at Makadara Grounds on the 2nd May 2005 from 8 am. The forum will be used to share the experiences and hardships encountered at work places by employees of different sectors including the EPZs, Security Guards and Casual Labourers.
